A 21-year-old man will appear in court in Kyiv after using a popular Telegram dating bot to extort over UAH 1.6 million from the daughter of a deceased Ukrainian serviceman. The criminal used promises to teach the girl how to earn money on cryptocurrency in order to gain full access to her finances.
According to the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, an indictment for fraud on a particularly large scale has already been sent to court. The pre-trial investigation was conducted by investigators of the Svyatoshyn Police Department with operational support from the Cyber Police Department.
According to the investigation, the scheme began with communication with a 20-year-old Odessa woman in a virtual bot. Later, the guy offered his new acquaintance help with earning money on the crypto market. To do this, he tricked her into giving her online banking passwords, convincing her that he was only getting access to an empty card. Instead, the fraudster saw all the victim's accounts, which contained payments from the state for the death of his military father.
The attacker began to gradually withdraw funds. At first, he withdrew 6,000 hryvnias daily through supermarket cash registers, and later moved on to larger transactions, buying cryptocurrency and transferring money to fake cards. When the girl noticed the disappearance of the funds and contacted the bank, the suspect applied psychological pressure and convinced her not to trust bank employees. As a result, he completely emptied the account by 1.6 million hryvnias, after which he closed it.
During the investigation, it also became clear that the victim had never met the guy in person, and the photos he sent her belonged to someone else. Now, for this crime, he faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
As a reminder, the Verkhovna Rada has generally adopted Bill No. 10190 on combating electronic communications fraud and fraudulent "call centers."
Previously, dev.ua told how Ukrainian developers almost got jobs at fraudulent call centers that disguised vacancies as regular IT positions.
