Elon Musk proposed building a factory for xAI AI satellites and a catapult for their launch on the Moon
Elon Musk told xAI employees about his plan to create a manufacturing site on the Moon that would produce satellites with computing modules for artificial intelligence. He wants to launch them into space using a giant accelerator that would act as a catapult and launch cargo from the lunar surface.
Elon Musk told xAI employees about his plan to create a manufacturing site on the Moon that would produce satellites with computing modules for artificial intelligence. He wants to launch them into space using a giant accelerator that would act as a catapult and launch cargo from the lunar surface.
According to The New York Times, Musk spoke about this during an internal meeting with employees on Tuesday evening. He said that «we need to fly to the moon» so that the company can increase the computing power for the development of AI and gain an advantage over other players. According to Musk, the future lunar infrastructure should produce satellites that will provide the necessary calculations, and the launch into space will be carried out by the so-called mass driver, that is, a system that accelerates the cargo and «shoots» it into space.
The publication notes that during the conversation, Musk did not explain how exactly the project could be implemented and in what timeframe. At the same time, he linked this idea to previous statements about the development of computing infrastructure in space. Last week, Musk said that he was merging xAI with SpaceX to accelerate plans to create data centers outside the Earth. In the same speech, he touched on the development of X and said that the social network has about 600 million active users per month, and new services such as X Money and a separate chat application should increase daily use of the platform.
Mass Driver is a concept for a booster to launch cargo without a traditional rocket launch, often described in science fiction and engineering models. According to the logic of such systems, the cargo is accelerated along a long path, and then «thrown out» in the desired direction. Musk previously positioned Mars as the main goal of SpaceX, but in recent months he has more often publicly spoken about the Moon as an intermediate stage and a springboard for subsequent missions.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how American businessman Elon Musk said that SpaceX will focus on creating a «self-developed city» on the Moon, which can be built «in less than 10 years.» According to him, implementing this idea on Mars will take longer.
