The first open 5G space on the basis of a university has appeared in Kyiv. The Kyiv Aviation Institute, together with Vodafone Ukraine, launched a zone with a fifth-generation network, open to students, teachers and anyone with compatible devices.
The project was implemented on the basis of the main building of the KAI at 1 Lubomyr Huzar Street. The network covers the first and second floors. According to Vodafone, access to 5G will be available to all users who have devices supporting this technology and the operator’s SIM card.
The technical equipment for the zone was supplied by Nokia. The network provides transmission speeds of up to 10 Gbps and latency of up to 1 ms, allowing it to be used in the fields of autonomous transportation, AR/VR, telemedicine, smart cities, and industrial automation.
The university’s 5G space became the first open facility of its kind in Ukraine. Previously, the technology was mainly used in corporate offices or in production. At KAI, the zone was made available to a wide range of users, which should create a favorable environment for research, testing, and development of new solutions.
In addition to the network itself, KAI and Vodafone announced the launch of a new one and a half year master’s program in Big Data and Data Science. The program is practice-oriented and implemented in collaboration with experts from the Big Data Lab. The parties also plan to create a modern research laboratory with advanced technical equipment.
Vodafone noted that supporting education is part of its long-term strategy. In Ukraine, the operator serves 15.7 million customers and has invested UAH 50 billion in the development of telecom infrastructure since 2015.
We would like to remind you that we also published an article about how the National Police of Ukraine and the mobile operator «Vodafone Ukraine» announced the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation, which will provide the police with access to Vodafone’s Telescope SMS messaging platform.
