Monobank co-founder Oleg Gorohovsky claims that a cybersquatter wants to sell them the domain monobank.com for $2 million, and Monobank’s lawyers are working on ways to possibly resolve the situation. However, the domain owner denies this information.

«We know. This is a squatter. He wants something like $2 million or something like that… The lawyers are working on it,» Gorohovsky briefly answered questions from dev.ua journalists.
After checking this domain through imena.ua, we learned that the domain name monobank.com was registered back in 2014 (at that time, the Ukrainian Monobank had not yet launched), and the contact details are for a person named Bohdan Shevchuk.
What is cybersquatting?
Cybersquatting is the activity of registering and offering for sale a domain name with the dishonest intention of profiting from parasitism on another’s trademark.
Interestingly, there is a monobank.com page on LinkedIn, and the founder of Monobank.Inc is listed as Bohdan Shevchuk. At the same time, the year of foundation of monobank.com is listed as 2021, when the domain name data was updated.
On the monobank.com website, there is an offer to «book a card», as well as a transition to the application, which offers access to cryptocurrency trading.
The presence of the domain monobank.com was previously noticed by IT professional Mariana Shama. She wrote a post about it on LinkedIn, noting that many people were tagging this particular page regarding news about Mono’s lemon marketing campaign.
Representatives of the Monobank team, in the comments to the post, called for complaints about this account.
UPD. The owner of the domain monobank.com, Bohdan Shevchuk, in response to these statements, denied the above statements by Gorokhovsky.
«I am sincerely sorry that we were unable to realize our possible cooperation. I would also like to immediately note: the statements that we tried to sell the domain or information about it are not true. We have never set ourselves the goal of such an action,» Shevchuk noted in a comment on the LinkedIn social network, tagging Oleg Gorokhovsky.
He also explained that he had repeatedly tried to contact Mono representatives «in order to clarify the situation and find mutually beneficial solutions,» but had not received a response to his requests. At the same time, he emphasized that he remained open to further dialogue.
Shevchuk also added that monobank.com is the official website of the American company Monobank Inc., registered in 2021, and they «have no relation to the Ukrainian bank „mono“, and vice versa — they always clearly emphasize independence to avoid confusion.»
