Broadcom is closely examining Intel’s chip development and marketing business, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous sources. Broadcom has reportedly discussed with its advisers the possibility of making a bid, but will likely do so only if it finds a partner for Intel’s manufacturing business. However, all discussions have been informal, no paperwork has been sent to Intel, and Broadcom may decide not to pursue a deal, the people said.
Additionally, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been exploring control of some or all of Intel’s chip manufacturing plants, potentially as part of a consortium of investors or other structure, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Broadcom and TSMC are operating separately and without mutual cooperation. It is also noted that the negotiations are still preliminary and largely informal.
On the other hand, Frank Yiri, Intel’s interim executive chairman, has told people close to him that he is most focused on maximizing value for Intel shareholders.
Recently, according to Baird, a possible deal is being discussed in which TSMC would send engineers to one of Intel’s most advanced chip manufacturing plants. The goal of such cooperation would be to apply TSMC’s expertise and ensure the viability of Intel’s manufacturing processes.
