Lviv will become one of five cities in Europe to test AI for water quality monitoring
Lviv City Administration has joined the large-scale research project AQUAMON, which involves the implementation of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the field of monitoring water systems. This is an initiative of the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon Europe program, and Lviv became the only city from Ukraine among the five pilot participants along with London, Turin, Paris and Limassol.
Lviv City Administration has joined the large-scale research project AQUAMON, which involves the implementation of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the field of monitoring water systems. This is an initiative of the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon Europe program, and Lviv became the only city from Ukraine among the five pilot participants along with London, Turin, Paris and Limassol.
According to the Lviv City Council, the project will create a digital twin of the city’s water infrastructure. This technological solution will combine a network of sensors that will record key parameters of drinking and wastewater quality with analytical tools based on artificial intelligence.
The system will allow in real time:
monitor the concentration of microplastics and other hazardous impurities;
predict potential threats to water supply;
respond promptly to changes in environmental indicators;
simulate critical scenarios to avoid emergencies.
The result of the implementation should be improved water quality, transparency of water resources management processes, and overall strengthening of the city’s environmental safety.
The international AQUAMON consortium includes 16 partners from different countries: scientific institutes, technical universities, municipal water utilities and technology companies. Among them are the CERTH Research Center, the Technical University of Berlin, the University of Southampton and other institutions working on the digital transformation of water systems in cities.
A little more about Horizon Europe
This is a key EU research program with funding of over €90 billion, focused on technological breakthroughs in the fields of ecology, medicine, energy and infrastructure. Lviv’s participation in AQUAMON not only opens up access to innovative solutions, but also brings Ukrainian utilities into the European context of technological developments. The successful implementation of the pilot could make Lviv a model example of digital modernization for other cities in Ukraine.
