Musk announced the plans at X, and the first reactions were collected by Gizmodo. The entrepreneur wrote: «We are building Grokipedia @xAI» and promised «massive improvement over Wikipedia.» He also called on engineers to join xAI, promising an «open source knowledge repository» with no limits on use.

What is known about the format? It is unknown whether Grokipedia will have classic pages by topic, like Wikipedia, or whether it will be an interface based on the Grok chatbot. It is not explained where the facts will come from: from open sources with links or generated by AI. There is no neutrality policy, community editing rules, or appeals procedures.
Experience with Grok has shown that «twisting» answers to the owner’s expectations can have toxic side effects. Previously, the bot issued conspiracies and unacceptable formulations — precisely after Musk’s public complaints about the «wrong» answers. Without transparent rules of data origin and moderation, the risk of repeating mistakes is high.
Musk has publicly supported Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger’s ideas: allowing competing articles on the same topic, removing «blacklists» of sources, revealing the guidelines, introducing open ratings of materials, and replacing «consensus» with a different decision-making procedure. But whether these proposals will become the actual framework of Grokipedia is not said.
Another open question is the role of AI. If content is mostly generated by xAI models, there will be a demand for rigorous fact-checking and transparent source tracking. If the focus is on human editors, it will be necessary to build a community, moderation tools, and institutions of trust — something that Wikipedia has been building for years.
Musk has repeatedly criticized Wikipedia for being «biased» and has referred to it as «Wokipedia» on more than one occasion. In 2023, he founded xAI and launched Grok as a «less censored» chatbot. There have been attempts to create ideological alternatives to Wikipedia: in particular, Conservapedia, which is often criticized for its low quality and one-sidedness. Wikipedia’s strength lies in its transparent links, neutrality policy, and thousands of volunteer editors. For Grokipedia, the key to trust will be precisely these «boring» things: rules, sources, moderation, and accountability—not big claims.
