According to TechCrunch, Zuckerberg said that Meta expects to build tens of gigawatts of capacity this decade, and «hundreds of gigawatts or more» in the future. He also emphasized that how the company designs this infrastructure, invests in it, and forges partnerships should become a long-term competitive advantage for Meta.
Within Meta Compute, the company has named three leaders. Santesh Janardhan will be responsible for how Meta’s data centers and network will be designed, what technologies and software solutions will be used there, as well as for the launch and day-to-day operation of this infrastructure. Daniel Gross will lead the capacity planning direction: how much computing the company needs now and in the future, who to partner with to supply the equipment, and how to calculate it all from a business perspective. A third member, Dina Powell McCormick, will lead work with governments on the location, investment, and financing of infrastructure projects.
Meta has already warned investors that it will increase spending on AI infrastructure. The company believes that control over hardware and data centers will affect not only how quickly models can be trained, but also how quickly they appear in products for users.
AI model developers are competing not only in the quality of their algorithms, but also in access to computing and electricity for data centers. In the US, there is already talk that demand for AI capacity could increase dramatically in the coming years, and large technology companies are increasingly investing in new sites and electricity supply contracts.
