According to the official Meta blog, the company has filed a lawsuit against Joy Timeline HK Limited, the developer of the CrushAI app, which allows users to generate nude images using other people’s photos. The lawsuit was filed in Hong Kong, where the company is registered, to prohibit it from promoting such products on Meta platforms.
Meta says the company has repeatedly tried to bypass automated ad moderation after its ads were removed for violating its policies. Now, Meta plans to not only block such accounts and ads, but also share data about sites that distribute such services with other technology companies through the Tech Coalition Lantern initiative. More than 3,800 unique URLs have already been shared.
Facebook and Instagram are also restricting searches for queries like «nudify,» «undress,» and «delete clothing.» The company has improved its tools to detect ads with manipulative content, even if they don’t feature explicit nudity, and is blocking networks of accounts that coordinate to circumvent the rules.
«Strip» apps are a new form of digital abuse that uses generative AI to create intimate images without a person’s consent. These services are often advertised on social media or even placed in the App Store. Meta supports new legislative initiatives, such as the US TAKE IT DOWN Act, which protects victims of such content, as well as tools such as StopNCII.org and Take It Down to quickly remove such images from the Internet.
