Meta is installing a Model Capability Initiative tool on the computers of its US employees, Reuters reports. It will record mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes and periodically take screenshots of work applications and websites. The company says it wants to give its models more real-world examples of how people interact with computers.
Meta believes that it is precisely on such small actions that the models still often make mistakes. This includes working with drop-down menus, hotkeys and other common office scenarios. The company claims that the collected data will not be used to evaluate employee productivity, but only to train the models. It has not publicly specified what types of sensitive content will be excluded from such collection.
The new tool is part of a broader internal program at Meta that is reengineering its workflows around AI. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth described a vision in an internal memo that would see agents do most of the work, with humans only setting tasks, checking, and correcting the results. At the same time, Meta is pushing the use of AI agents in its daily work and is preparing to cut 10% of its global workforce.
Against this backdrop, the MCI story goes beyond a purely technical update. In fact, Meta is starting to collect not just code, documents, or work files, but the very behavior of an employee at the computer. This means that the company wants to teach its systems not only the result of work, but also the way a person achieves this result.
The key risk in this story is that the line between AI training and digital surveillance of workers is becoming increasingly blurred. Experts interviewed by Reuters emphasize that in the United States there are almost no federal restrictions on such monitoring, while in some European countries such practices could conflict with labor laws or personal data protection rules.
