Meta announced the launch on its blog, noting that this is the first version with basic features, which will be further expanded based on user feedback. The app displays call notifications, so you can decide whether to answer without your iPhone. The screen shows the full text of messages, rather than shortened previews, which is convenient for longer chats. Both written replies and dictation are supported, and voice messages can be recorded and sent directly from the watch, saving time on trips and during workouts.
Special attention has been paid to media: images and stickers are reproduced more clearly, and viewing the history of correspondence has become more convenient thanks to the broader context of the conversation on the screen. Emojis are provided for quick reactions. This allows you to respond to lively chats without opening your iPhone. All messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption, so the privacy policy coincides with the mobile version.
Compatibility extends to Apple Watch starting with Series 4, running watchOS 10 or later. This move aligns the WhatsApp experience on the watch with other popular watchOS messengers and addresses a long-standing community request for a «full-fledged» client, not just notifications. Meta also emphasizes that this is just the beginning; in the coming updates, they plan to add features and adapt the interface to daily use scenarios on a small screen.
