Microsoft is laying off security, gaming, and sales employees — and that's separate from productivity-related cuts

Microsoft is making cuts across multiple divisions, including security, experience and devices, sales, and gaming. The layoffs are separate from cuts targeting underperforming employees across the company.
On Tuesday, employees began receiving notices of layoffs at Microsoft's security division, Business Insider reports , even though the company had said just last year that security was its No. 1 priority.
In 2024, Microsoft expanded its Secure Future Initiative, making security a top priority for every employee. The change came after years of security issues at Microsoft, including what the U.S. Department of Homeland Security called a “cascade of security breaches” that allowed Chinese hackers to access thousands of customers’ emails.
The company has also made safety a top priority on which employees are evaluated during attestation.
“If you’re faced with a choice between security and another priority, your answer is clear: do security,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote in an email to Microsoft employees last year.
The source did not give the exact number of employees laid off, but noted that the number is small. For now, it is known for sure that these layoffs will occur separately from cuts related to low productivity .
It also became known that Meta is laying off 5% of low-performance employees.
