«Grok 3 release with demo Monday at 8:00 PM PT. The smartest AI on Earth,» Elon Musk wrote on X this morning.
He added that he and his team will be refining the product over the weekend. «So until then, offline,» the billionaire said.
Musk had already fueled anticipation for the new Grok 3 when he called it an AI model that would outperform any competing tool released so far at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday. At the time, the billionaire’s release date sounded like a week or two away and «quite soon.»
Grok 3 is planned to be a next-generation chatbot, meaning it will be more complex and cheaper to manufacture. Musk said the model has powerful reasoning capabilities, trained on synthetic data and able to reflect on the mistakes it makes, looking back and forth through the data in an attempt to achieve logical consistency.
Some see more humanity and a sense of humor in Grok.
Grok 2 is already being used to create images and format math worksheets with answers, and it can output the results in LaTeX. Lisa Yew plans to have the chatbot write Windows macros, mark up math tests, and suggest gifts, interesting ideas, food by ingredient list, write rules and procedures, and search certain uncataloged websites. She also plans to use Grok to solve creative tasks, including criticizing her creative writing, suggesting very specific situations, writing letters, creating spreadsheets with given data, analyzing data in spreadsheets, and creating and executing follow-up tasks that arise from the data, which was the ceiling for Grok 2. The user sees potential in the new chatbot model.
Users compare Grok 3 to Wikipedia, which you could send a text message to, and as soon as you asked it a question, it could use its vast knowledge to easily answer it, without having to read the articles yourself.
About Grok
Elon Musk announced the launch of the new Grok chatbot in early November 2023. At that time, it was planned that the conversational chatbot would become available to all «X Premium+ subscribers» after the completion of the «early beta».
The bot is the first innovation from Musk’s AI startup, xAI, which he announced back in July. Musk has given the company’s team, which consists of just 12 people, an ambitious mission to «understand the true nature of the universe.»
The beta version of Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini was released in mid-August 2024. At that time, xAI planned to deploy chatbots in X (Twitter) functionality for improved search capabilities, post analytics, and reply functionality. This could mean that AI-based replies could appear in X.
Early Grok researchers reported that it could generate realistic images and had virtually no filters or limitations.
On December 8, 2024, the social network X (ex-Twitter) opened free access to the proprietary chatbot Grok AI for all users. The next day, AI expert Oleksiy Minakov tested Grok, shared his impressions of the chatbot, as well as the features and differences of Grok from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
In January 2025, xAI released the Grok application, a standalone version of the AI bot that was previously built into X.
