The designer advises not to rush into meaningless tests. Why is that and what other experts think about this?

The designer advises not to rush into meaningless tests. Why is that and what other experts think about this?

Andriy Kolodyazhensky has been working in design for over 6 years as a UX/UI designer. He told how, while communicating with a representative of a potential employer, he came across a red flag, after which he advises to be careful with the implementation of tests. It turns out that other IT specialists have also encountered similar situations.

Andriy said that he received a position to take on the role of Senior UX/UI designer, the salary was offered at the Middle+ level, and at first they said that it was necessary to perform a test, namely a landing page.

«No introductory calls were made beforehand,» the designer adds.

According to the correspondence, a screenshot of which Andriy provided, he asked for a test so that he could get acquainted with it. To which a representative of the company, which the designer does not name, sent a link to Google files and set a deadline for completion.

Later, the same person with whom Andriy corresponded answered questions about the tasks that will be in this position. And also added that the position has already been closed. «Thank you for your time and I apologize for the inconvenience,» the message said.

«Don’t rush to perform meaningless tests, because in a day the position may already be closed,» Andriy writes in his post.

According to the comments of other experts who came to the designer in the comments, there are even two red flags here:

  • a test first stage, without a call with a recruiter and discussion of the position and conditions;
  • setting a deadline for a person who is not yet an employee of the company.

These important components are primarily emphasized by Iryna Zalevska, Head of Recruitment at Gamedev.

Other experts also write about the experience of communicating during a job search, similar to the one Andriy described. In particular:

  • Viktor Petsko, Responsive Website: «The same situation happened with Domino in Lutsk! I spent several days on layout, and as a result, «no response, no greeting.» I got the impression that this is a normal attitude towards candidates from many companies.»
  • Dmytro Masokha, UI/UX Designer: «I also saw this proposal regarding the test in the format of «we haven’t conducted a single round yet, but make us a landing page.»
  • Olena Kazakova, Customer Support: «It also happened once, after sending a test, the vacancy was closed the very next day. After some time, it was open again in this company, I decided to write to them again, they did not immediately find my previous test, then they already refused without explanation. So for me this is a sign of an extremely unserious company. Another time, after the test, conditions were revealed at the interview that did not suit me. So now there is no motivation at all to do any test before the interview, even for 15 minutes.»
  • Alina Zamaraeva, graphic designer: «90% test before communication, in the TG link and «do it, and then we will ignore you.» Now in search. Only three times there was a test after calls, but once it was not even a test, but an unscheduled test week.»
  • Kostya Kazmiruk, Full-stack Developer: «I only ran the test 1-2 times, after talking to HR beforehand. Otherwise, I don’t see the point in wasting a lot of energy just like that, sitting and staring at the ceiling turns out to be more productive.»

Serhiy Grinchenko, Senior UI/UX designer, received a similar offer. «Thank you for saving me,» he adds, addressing Andriy.

However, some IT professionals note that they are sometimes paid for testing. In particular, Dmytro Lipiridi, a Java Software Engineer at Delasport, reported that he was once paid $100 for testing. But such cases, according to experts, do not happen often.

Summing up the situation, experts emphasize that they are not against tests, however:

  • Chief Executive Officer at Heeeper Dmytro Koval agrees that test sessions should definitely not be for 48 hours, but for a maximum of 8, and if they are related to a project, they should be paid. «And this trend arose because after the courses they make you a portfolio, prepare you for an interview, which can also be done through AI. And after a successful interview it turns out that a person is „not in the right place“ and does not know how to open a figma. Nowadays, there is no way without this, it is just a matter of common sense how to formalize it,» he adds.
  • Developer Mykhailo Kovalevsky emphasized that he often sees a similar trend, and in particular, offers of test positions without a prior conversation, on the market. «And it is obvious that not only in the field of UI/UX, but in the entire IT market in general. As soon as the conversation with an HR/recruiter starts with this — I ignore the vacancy. If you, as an employer, want me to do some work for free — give me time so that I understand the seriousness of your intentions and assess whether I am interested in this position, company, etc. I hope that such a policy will soon have a vector for change,» he added.
