New Pope calls artificial intelligence a key challenge for humanity
The newly elected Pope Leo XIV compared the development of AI to the Industrial Revolution, which radically changed people's lives and accelerated the mass urbanization of the population.
The newly elected Pope Leo XIV compared the development of AI to the Industrial Revolution, which radically changed people's lives and accelerated the mass urbanization of the population.
Pope Leo XIV outlined his vision of the papacy in an address to the College of Cardinals, and he also explained why he chose his papal name.
"I decided to take the name Leo XIV. There are various reasons for this, but the main one is that Pope Leo XIII, in his historic encyclical Rerum Novarum, considered the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution. In our time, the Church offers everyone the richness of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and the development of artificial intelligence, which poses new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and work," the pontiff's words are quoted by The Verge portal.
The Catholic Church has taken a keen interest in the development of artificial intelligence in recent years. In a January document published by the Vatican and translated into English, the church reflects on AI, its limitations, its relationship to truth, and the ethics of developing and using the technology.
The document also mentions a warning made a year earlier by Pope Francis that AI could create “partially or entirely false narratives that are believed and broadcast as if they were true.”
Leo XIV also called for an early peace and an end to the Russo-Ukrainian War. During his cardinalate, Leo XIV called Russia's war against Ukraine aggressive and imperialist in nature.
