Nvidia says Intel will help create «x86 systems-on-chips (SoCs) that integrate Nvidia RTX GPU chipsets.» These will run on a wide range of PCs and tightly pair Intel processors with Nvidia GPUs, The Verge reports .
This will help Intel and Nvidia better compete with AMD, which currently dominates Intel in desktop gaming CPUs and offers a wide range of CPUs for laptops with AI support. However, the partnership with Nvidia raises additional questions about the future of Intel’s Arc graphics business.
Nvidia and Intel will also collaborate to unify their architectures using Nvidia’s NVLink communications system, which is used in data centers to connect GPUs. «Intel will create x86 processors designed specifically for Nvidia, which Nvidia will integrate into its AI platforms and offer to the market,» Nvidia said.
According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, the collaboration connects Nvidia’s AI and compute stacks with Intel processors and the vast x86 ecosystem.
Recall that last month the US government agreed to buy about 10% of Intel shares for $8.9 billion. SoftBank is also investing $2 billion in Intel as the chipmaker, which is going throughtough times, cuts costs and lays off thousands of workers .
