As Mezha.media reports with reference to a post by the SAG-AFTRA trade union, the restrictions apply to the creation of videos with voice and visual «doubles» without the written consent of the image rights holders. OpenAI is working on the updates together with SAG-AFTRA, United Talent Agency, Creative Artists Agency and the Association of Talent Agents. Formally recorded consent becomes a prerequisite for any use of voice or appearance, and in case of abuse, prompt removals and additional safeguards are provided.
The impetus for the changes came from public outcry from artists and families about deepfakes. In particular, actor Bryan Cranston raised the issue of unauthorized use of his image, and the families of Robin Williams and George Carlin also complained about voiceovers and acting. As part of the new policy, OpenAI declares the right of artists to control whether imitations are allowed, to what extent, and under what conditions. For historical figures, the company claims a balance between freedom of expression and the right to image protection. At the same time, authorized representatives are given the opportunity to prohibit use in specific cases.
The rise of generative video has brought issues of «voice and likeness rights» and fair compensation to the forefront. The new rules in Sora effectively standardize the «permit first, use later» approach and create a rapid response process for violations.
