OpenAI is preparing a new extension for ChatGPT: the company wants to integrate Sora, its tool for creating videos using artificial intelligence, into the chatbot.
This is reported by Engadget with reference to The Information. OpenAI wants to integrate Sora directly into ChatGPT in the near future. At the same time, there is no specific launch date in the publication, so for now we are talking about the company’s plans, and not about an announcement with a specific deadline.
For OpenAI, this seems like a logical continuation of the strategy. The company officially launched Sora 2 and a separate Sora iOS app in the fall of 2025. At the time, OpenAI positioned the service as an independent platform for creating, remixing, and distributing short videos, and access was initially opened in the US and Canada. The company later also released an Android version of the app.
The integration into ChatGPT could dramatically increase Sora’s reach. According to OpenAI itself, ChatGPT already has over 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paid consumer subscribers. Against this backdrop, bringing video generation into the core product seems like an attempt to make Sora a more mainstream feature rather than a niche app.
There is also a practical side to the issue. Video generation for OpenAI is expensive to maintain: in the official API pricing, the company indicates that Sora 2 in 720p resolution costs from $0.10 per second, and the more expensive sora-2-pro versions can reach $0.70 per second depending on the format and quality. That is why expanding access to Sora inside ChatGPT will almost certainly require new limits, queues, or a separate monetization model.
As a result, OpenAI seems to be moving towards a model where ChatGPT becomes the single entry point for most of its tools. But the main thing that is missing from this story so far is a clear answer to the question of «when exactly?» The most accurate wording at the moment is: Sora is expected to be added to ChatGPT «soon,» but with no announced launch date.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how OpenAI began selling users additional credits for its Sora AI video generation tool. An additional 10 generations are sold for $4 through Apple’s App Store.
