This is reported by TechSpot, citing data published in a working paper by the US National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). The authors divided the queries into categories and tracked changes over the three years since ChatGPT was launched.
In June 2025, 73% of all requests from regular (non-corporate) accounts were non-work-related (up from 53% a year ago). The largest category is «Practical advice» (28.8% of requests): users are learning, looking for «how-to» instructions, health or sports tips, and creative ideas.
The second most popular was «Search for information», which grew from 14% to 24%. People ask for facts, recipes, products and increasingly use ChatGPT as an alternative to Google. Working with texts came in third place: 10,6% of users ask to edit or evaluate what they have written, another 8% ask to create letters or messages. Translations and text summary generation remain popular.
In the work context, ChatGPT is most often used for documentation and notes. This is followed by decision-making assistance and creative tasks. The least is for fact-finding, as users are aware of the risk of AI «hallucinations.» This means that in an office environment, a chatbot is perceived more as a consultant or assistant, rather than a source of accurate data.
As for the audience, there has been a turning point since the beginning of 2024: if women made up 37% of users then, then in July 2025 — 52%. Almost half of the entire base (46%) is young people aged 18-25. They mostly ask about hobbies and advice for their personal lives, while older users more often ask about work tasks. People with higher education and high incomes are more likely to integrate AI into their professional activities.
ChatGPT now has approximately 700 million active users per week, generating approximately 29,000 messages per second. The number of requests per year has increased sixfold, from 451 million in June 2024 to over 2.6 billion in June 2025. OpenAI notes that waves of activity often coincide with the emergence of new features, and in general, almost 10% of the world’s adult population already uses the chatbot regularly.
