First successful application of MinesEye: the system detected a hazard at the bottom of a reservoir
The first technical survey of a reservoir for explosives using MinesEye sensor technology was conducted on a lake near Irpin. The system allowed for remote detection of potentially dangerous objects without the sappers diving into the water.
The first technical survey of a reservoir for explosives using MinesEye sensor technology was conducted on a lake near Irpin. The system allowed for remote detection of potentially dangerous objects without the sappers diving into the water.
According to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the mine action operator LLC «Rizyk Control» and the Charitable Foundation «Postup Foundation» joined the innovative operation. The object of the study was a lake that the community uses as a technical reservoir for the needs of the State Emergency Service.
During the mission, a drone with a MinesEye sensor system made two flights over an area of 2,200 m² in 15 minutes, flying at a height of only 20 cm above the water. According to the results of the scan, specialists discovered a number of ferromagnetic anomalies on the bottom, identifying 18 points for further underwater inspection. The next stage will be the work of sapper divers and the use of an underwater drone to verify the findings.
In conditions of low transparency and muddy bottom, traditional survey methods often prove to be insufficiently effective. New sensor technologies allow not only to speed up the process, but also to reduce risks for specialists. As Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Bezkaravayny noted, Ukraine is becoming a leader in the field of humanitarian demining thanks to the introduction of such technologies.
Since the beginning of 2025, over 2,000 km² of de-occupied lands have been returned to use in Ukraine. The total cleared area is almost 37,000 km². At the same time, over 137,000 km² of territories remain potentially dangerous due to the mine threat, including water bodies and temporarily occupied territories.
As a reminder, we also wrote that as of early June, 108 certified demining operators were already working in Ukraine. This helped increase the volume of safe demined areas by almost 50% compared to last year.
