Over 20% of children intend to work in IT and design: Ratatype survey

The international project with Ukrainian roots, Ratatype, surveyed 420 children aged 4–18 and found that IT professions and design were the most attractive to them, while blogging attracted only a small proportion of respondents.

As stated in the Ratatype press release, the study covered children living both in Ukraine and abroad. The goal is to understand what exactly attracts modern professions and how the environment and family influence the choice. According to the results, children most often named programming and other IT directions, design and medicine. A city effect is noticeable in preferences: residents of large cities (Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro) are more likely to lean towards creative and technological specialties, while children from small towns and those who currently live outside Ukraine are more likely to choose traditional roles such as a doctor, policeman or teacher.

Entrepreneurship stands out separately: approximately every tenth respondent sees himself as the founder of his own business: from a small handmade shop to a sports equipment retailer. The influence of the family is tangible: half of the participants indicated the professions of their parents, and it is noticeable in these answers that the example of adults often shapes the vector of children’s dreams. Against the background of the popularity of social networks, another touch seems unexpected: only about 6% of children named blogging as a desired profession, despite Western trends, where the share of those wishing to pursue a career in social networks is higher.

Ratatype explains that the idea for the survey arose after learning about American studies on children’s career dreams; the team decided to see what aspirations Ukrainian children have now, in the realities of a great war and rapid technological change. The sample, although small, demonstrates a steady attraction to professions that combine creativity with technology, as well as an interest in their own business as a way of self-realization.

A little more about Ratatype

This is an online simulator for learning fast typing, created by a Ukrainian team and aimed at schoolchildren, students, and adults. The team regularly conducts educational activities and surveys among users and their parents to track changes in the skills and career orientations of young people.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the number of people wishing to enroll in IT specialties has decreased in Ukraine, but leading universities say that enrollments are staying at the planned level and in some places are increasing. Industry companies are also not leaving universities and are continuing joint programs for students.
