During 2023-2024, attackers used access to customer data, possibly located in the temporarily occupied territories and in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, changed financial phone numbers, and then, having thus gained access to online banking, reissued customers' bank cards without their presence and withdrew money from them, the Cyberpolice reported .
To create the visual effect of the victims' presence at the branch when changing the financial number and reissuing the card, the perpetrators replaced the customers' photos using software.
After the bank card was reissued, the branch manager personally received it at the cash desk and subsequently transferred the funds into cash via ATMs or POS terminals directly at the branch.
The attackers embezzled funds from 19 bank accounts and caused losses totaling over UAH 1 million.
The participants in the criminal scheme are currently charged with unauthorized actions with information processed in electronic computers, automated systems, computer networks or stored on media of such information, committed by a person who has the right to access it. They face up to six years in prison.
