Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip as a "younger" version of the flagship Elite

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 mobile processor. This is a simplified version of its top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which should bring flagship performance and powerful AI features to more affordable smartphones.
According to Engadget, the new chip is built on a custom Oryon processor with a maximum frequency of 3.8 GHz versus 4.6 GHz in the Elite. Despite the reduced frequencies, the platform shows a noticeable increase in its class: Qualcomm promises about 36% higher performance compared to the Snapdragon 7 and up to 76% better responsiveness when surfing the web.
The updated Qualcomm Adreno is responsible for graphics. The company claims an 11% increase in performance in games and visually complex scenes, which should provide a more stable frame rate and smoother picture without a sharp jump in power consumption. The chip is aimed at modern Android flagships that run «heavy» games, record video in high resolution and multitask.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also focuses on on-device AI processing. The chip has a Hexagon NPU block to locally run AI models and «agent» assistants that can analyze context, offer personalized tips, and work without constantly turning to the cloud. A separate Sensing Hub module combines data from microphones and sensors to recognize the user’s intention to speak and instantly activate the voice assistant.
Qualcomm expects the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 smartphones to hit the market in the coming weeks. Among its partners, the company names OnePlus, which recently announced a new flagship without a detailed list of specifications, so it could be one of the first carriers of the new chip.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 fits into Qualcomm’s updated strategy: the Elite version closes the ultra-premium segment, while the «regular» Gen 5 offers most of the same features (modern AI, high performance and improved graphics) for a wider range of devices. As a result, manufacturers get another tool to reduce the cost of top smartphones without a sharp drop in capabilities, and users get a chance to have a flagship experience without the maximum price.
