“A recruiter is not an NPC, we also have a memory”. A Ukrainian recruiter told what typical mistakes of recruiters she encounters in her work
Marina Zheleva, an IT recruiter with ten years of experience who works as a Lead Recruiter at Extrawest, said that she encounters spam resumes from IT courses, empty profiles on GitHub, and suspiciously fast relocations from candidates.
Marina Zheleva, an IT recruiter with ten years of experience who works as a Lead Recruiter at Extrawest, said that she encounters spam resumes from IT courses, empty profiles on GitHub, and suspiciously fast relocations from candidates.
«Open position: Junior Frontend Developer, Mykolaiv. Experience from 1 year, ready to teach. It would seem that there are a lot of juniors on the market — take them, I don’t want them! But… I can’t find a person», — Zheleva wrote on her LinkedIn.
Identical resumes
«People after courses (especially GoIT) — what’s wrong with you? From cover letters to resumes and projects — everything is carbon-copy. Opening a vacancy is like Pandora’s box. The feeling is that the course curator copies all the vacancies he finds and simply throws them into the Telegram group: „Throw your resume, maybe it will work!“», — the recruiter said.
According to her, sometimes she receives more than 20 identical resumes from the same course at the same time. They do not include requirements such as location or experience.
«I even wrote to the curators of these courses and asked them not to do that. Because I want to honestly open the resume, answer honestly so that people understand why „no“. And not play „guessing“. For a while it worked… but not for long», — noted Maryna Zheleva.
«Empty» GitHub
The recruiter also talked about candidates with empty GitHub profiles. She noted that a beginner may not have commercial experience, but she still needs to understand their level of programming.
«I’m not a fan of test tasks. GitHub is your only weapon. I don’t read minds. I don’t guess on coffee grounds. We open your GitHub and see how you write code, what technologies you’ve tried, whether you even understand what you’re writing about in your resume. GitHub can be your advantage. But only if there’s something there besides READMEmd», — Zheleva pointed out.
She advised candidates without commercial experience, but who have done at least some pet project or freelance work, to highlight this experience. It is worth detailing what they learned and what technologies were used.
Teleportation to the desired location
«The vacancy clearly says: ‘Mykolaiv’. A resume arrives — Lviv. I write a refusal — the location is not suitable. Two days later, the same candidate sends the same resume, but with the location ‘Mykolaiv’. I politely remind him: ‘We already told you, you are not in Mykolaiv’. In response — ‘You are mistaken, there was no such thing’,» the recruiter told about her experience.
According to her, more than 70 candidates from other cities responded to the vacancy, which was indicated as «only Mykolaiv.» «Don’t do that. The recruiter is not an NPC [non-player character in video games], we also have a memory», — Zheleva pointed out.
She advised young people to take their first job search seriously, and reminded them that GitHub, a resume, and a personal approach matter.
«And don’t think that recruiters don’t notice stupid things. We do. Just like you notice ours», — Maryna Zheleva reminded.
Earlier, IT recruiter Tetyana Solovienko said that she received a developer candidate with 15 years of experience and a 39-page resume. This case was actively discussed by users on LinkedIn.
«Save your time and recruiters, please!» The recruiter said that she received a 39-page resume from a developer candidate. IT specialists claim that this is a good CV and joke
«As I write this post, I’m receiving threats.» Recruiter complains about former employer for late salary payments and claims threats from company manager
«The recruiter is not the enemy.» Why hiring specialists sometimes don’t read resumes (or so candidates think) and ask questions whose answers are already given
