"There were even a few nudes, so no one remembers whether there were any skills in them." Recruiters talk about the strangest resumes they've encountered at work. They even received a resume named after a candidate's dog
Working in recruiting is not only a routine of selecting the best candidates, but also an opportunity to collect non-trivial manifestations and requests of potential specialists. Every day, dozens, if not hundreds, of resumes pass through recruitment specialists. And some of them are compiled in a rather strange form. Recruiters make entire collections of such copies.
Working in recruiting is not only a routine of selecting the best candidates, but also an opportunity to collect non-trivial manifestations and requests of potential specialists. Every day, dozens, if not hundreds, of resumes pass through recruitment specialists. And some of them are compiled in a rather strange form. Recruiters make entire collections of such copies.
dev.ua asked specialists from Ukrainian IT companies to recall the most bizarre resumes they’ve ever received. Here are a few stories from recruiters that surprised them.
«The eyes of the Levi9 HR department have seen many variations of resumes, and although a high-quality and concise document always wins, the most memorable are the curious cases. For example, when candidates add photos from celebrations, weddings, or vacations — with a glass of beer, a hookah, or even a freshly caught crucian carp,» says Tetyana Lobetskaya, Talent Manager at Levi9 .
One of the most striking cases in Tatyana’s practice is the 10-page resume of a candidate for the position of Solutions Architect. «But the most striking detail was the ending of the list of his responsibilities with the phrase 'and other shit',» the specialist notes.
According to Tetyana, such moments make you smile, but at the same time remind you: your resume is your business card. «It should be professionally designed, avoiding unnecessary details and an informal tone. After all, the very first impression can affect the subsequent selection process,» adds Lobetskaya.
Talent Sourcing Consultants at Ciklum Iryna Korotun, Yuliya Mironovich, Anna Volkovska, and Nataliya Virych also shared their memories of the strangest resumes. Here are a few interesting cases.
One candidate submitted a 17-page CV that resembled an autobiographical novel. In addition to being extremely detailed, the CV was generously illustrated with personal photos.
The photos deserve a special mention. One candidate used a photo on his CV of himself in a suit and top hat, with a muskrat on his shoulder. It looked like he was about to attend a reception for the British Queen or investigating a magical murder in Victorian London.
One candidate accidentally sent a washing machine manual instead of a resume, but the document was signed as «CV.» He later clarified that this was a mistake.
One candidate created his own website, where his experience was presented in the form of an interactive tree — each project could be «expanded» by clicking on it, like a branch, to view the details.
Meanwhile, Roksolana Kurylo, Senior Recruitment Consultant at Ciklum, added another case: «I recently saw a resume on behalf of a candidate’s dog. Something like «my owner has been working as a … specialist for over 2 years.»
Daryna Kuzmyk, Talent&Culture Lead at Railsware, said that she has seen a lot of things during her time working in recruiting with her colleagues. And, of course, there are many cases when originality and creativity really border on weirdness or even craziness. «For example, once we received a presentation where each slide had a photo of the candidate from different angles… I think there were even a few nudes, so no one remembers whether it was about skills,» says Daryna.
On another resume, she says, the candidate attached a photo of himself in a Superman costume. «It definitely caught attention from the others. In general, I would like to note that creative photos or other „details“ are great, but you need to consider why you are adding them and what impression you want to make,» the specialist believes.
But there are still candidates, according to Darina, who really set you up with a certain quest with your resume. «And this is more annoying and repulsive than helpful, because it takes a lot of time. Example: in the portfolio section it says „in the resume“. The resume, in turn, is sent in a zip file that does not open. The Linkedin profile is completely empty,» she explains.
Also, it happens, says the Talent & Culture Lead at Railsware, that portfolios are sent under a password that you are not told. «This takes time for unnecessary communication. For candidates who want to stand out, I would advise them to first consider that this will be viewed by a human and you should not make their life difficult,» she noted.

«Save your time and recruiters, please!» The recruiter said that she received a 39-page resume from a developer candidate. IT specialists claim that this is a good CV and joke
