Ankit Masrani, a Microsoft employee in Seattle, said that while he planned to become a software engineer, he didn’t expect to work in security. Here’s the resume that helped Masrani land a job at Microsoft.
Ankit Masrani is currently developing access controls for Microsoft’s security platform, ensuring that customers' sensitive information remains «within geographic boundaries,» Business Insider reports.
After studying information technology in college and working on software systems, Masrani came to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in computer science. After a six-month internship at AWS during his studies, he became a full-time employee, working on data and network security, until he felt the need for a change.
«Honestly, it was very exhausting. And I wanted to change jobs to try something different,» Masrani said of his six and a half years at AWS.
Masrani says his last project before joining Microsoft was developing a user-managed key encryption feature, which required research into data security best practices. He says the work was «very interesting» and he began to learn about the data management and security teams.
Here is the resume he used to get a job at Microsoft, where he started on the Microsoft Purview security team as a senior software engineer. He is now a principal software engineer working on Microsoft’s security platform.

Masrani said he applied on the company’s website and had no references. He said if he were applying today, he probably wouldn’t have written such a long section about his education because people would likely focus on his 10 years of work experience. However, when he was out of school for a year or two, he said he thought it helped him ace interviews.
He recommends gaining experience with cloud services such as AWS or Microsoft Azure to understand scalable data processing.
«Data storage is very important as cloud services are used everywhere, from small to large software systems,» Masrani said.
The Software Engineer also noted that security knowledge is essential to work in the cybersecurity sector. Masrani noted that security protocols and data handling guidelines are often region-specific.
