The Russian military has begun to camouflage communications antennas inside mock trees that can appear to be part of the landscape from the air. The designs are designed to make them harder to spot during aerial reconnaissance and strike adjustments.
According to «Military» with reference to the Telegram channel Victory Drones, a plastic mesh frame is used for the «tree». The mesh is formed into a trunk and crown, giving volume and silhouette, and then covered with mounting foam to make the structure stiffer and give it texture. At the final stage, the dummy is painted to match the local vegetation so that it blends in with the surroundings.
The communication antenna is placed inside such a «trunk». The calculation is that the operator of a Ukrainian reconnaissance drone may perceive the object as an ordinary tree and not distinguish it as a technical position. Such camouflage potentially complicates the search for communication points and the adjustment of strikes on elements of the enemy’s communication infrastructure.
The publication notes that the idea is not new. Similar dummies were used during World War I, when fake trees served as hidden observation posts.
