In Ukraine, 138,500 sq. km are covered in landmines. How the American company Safe Pro Group and its AI, which has already recognized over 1 million images, will help in demining
The American company Safe Pro, a leader in artificial intelligence-based protection and security solutions, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ukrainian National Mine Action Center to modernize mine clearance through AI-based threat detection.
The American company Safe Pro, a leader in artificial intelligence-based protection and security solutions, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ukrainian National Mine Action Center to modernize mine clearance through AI-based threat detection.
About cooperation
In Ukraine, over 138,500 sq km of territory is contaminated with landmines, which is equivalent to an area the size of North Carolina.
Safe Pro and the center’s experts will collaborate to explore the possibility of integrating the patented SpotlightAI™ artificial intelligence image processing technology into demining methodologies and training programs in Ukraine. The results could help modernize the country’s approach to detecting and neutralizing landmines, the company said in a press release .
«The Center’s mission underscores Ukraine’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology to address one of the world’s most significant mine crises. The selection of our system, AI-based small-object threat detection with precision mapping technology, confirms our vision and capabilities. We are honored to play a critical role in developing modernized demining standards and methodologies that will help save lives and restore safe land use,» said Dan Erdberg, Chairman and CEO of Safe Pro Group Inc.
Through this strategic partnership, Safe Pro and Center will develop next-generation demining techniques and training programs based on AI-based threat detection.
Among the main functions of the Mine Action Center is planned to promote cooperation between government agencies, public and private organizations, and research institutions, ensuring thorough testing, validation, and certification of advanced technologies, including SpotlightAI.
How the technology works
SpotlightAI™ is a patented, hyper-scalable, AI-powered drone demining ecosystem running on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud and working at the edge with SpotlightAI™ Onsite, designed to rapidly and accurately map explosive hazards. Analyzing imagery from drones can accelerate demining efforts by accurately identifying mine and unexploded ordnance threats across vast areas.
The technology is powered by advanced machine learning (ML) models trained on a large proprietary dataset that can rapidly detect and localize over 150 types of landmines and unexploded ordnance. The tool can process vast amounts of sub-centimeter imagery, creating high-resolution orthomosaic maps and interactive 3D models. In addition, detection is possible in both real-time and hyperscale environments on the AWS Cloud.
AI-powered maps enable comprehensive visualization of the surveyed areas with GPS tags. SpotlightAI™ processes images in less than 0.2 seconds. In comparison, traditional manual threat analysis takes about a minute for each image. Safe Pro’s AI-powered threat detection ecosystem has already analyzed over 1,290,679 drone images, identifying over 23,286 explosive threats across 5,338 hectares, equivalent to more than 9,975 NFL football fields.
Help Ukraine
At the end of January, it became known about the memorandum that Safe Pro Group signed with the Ukrainian agricultural company Nibulon. As part of the cooperation, it was planned to develop and improve non-technical survey (NTO) methodologies to expand the capabilities of NIBULON in the field of mine action and accelerate the process of clearing agricultural lands. The company planned to integrate Spotlight AI technology into its work.
Almost a month ago, at the end of February, Safe Pro Group announced the expansion of its activities in Ukraine in a number of projects, especially together with Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic University. In particular, for the development of strategic mine action initiatives, cooperation with the university included:
implementation of advanced American technologies in the training of bachelors and masters in the educational program «Environmental Protection Technologies and Humanitarian Demining» based on the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy Conservation and Energy Management (NN IEE), in particular the application based on artificial intelligence Safe Pro Ukraine Spotlight AI for rapid detection of mines and explosive devices, as well as monitoring and assessing the degree of contamination of the territory;
increasing the number of training programs for veterans at advanced training courses in humanitarian demining that are already operating at our university;
new initiatives for soil cleanup and land reclamation to restore the agricultural sector and ensure Ukraine’s food security.
About Safe Pro Group
Safe Pro Group is a leading provider of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions specializing in drone image processing, utilizing commercially available «off-the-shelf» drones with proprietary machine learning and computer vision technology to enable rapid identification of explosive threats, providing a much safer and more efficient alternative to traditional human-based analysis methods.
Built on a cloud ecosystem and powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Safe Pro Group’s scalable platform targets multiple markets, including commercial, government, law enforcement and humanitarian sectors, where its Safe Pro AI software, Safe-Pro USA protective gear and Airborne Response drone-based services can work together to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
A new remotely controlled demining machine has been developed in the Donetsk region. It can demine up to 5 hectares per day and can withstand an anti-tank mine.

Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
