Six hours of sleep and a phone in the morning: what Elon Musk's daily schedule looks like

According to Business Insider, Elon Musk’s typical day is a tightly packed schedule with no clear boundaries between work and personal life. In a 2023 interview with The Wall Street Journal, the entrepreneur said that he usually goes to bed around 3 a.m. and sleeps for about six hours. That means getting up around 9 a.m. — no «morning rituals» in the usual sense.
Musk himself has repeatedly admitted that the first thing he does after waking up is pick up his phone. Social media and news are part of his morning routine, just like they are for millions of ordinary users, although in his case the feed often consists of crisis messages from the Tesla, SpaceX, or Platform X teams.
Musk has made conflicting statements about breakfast over the years, from joking about a daily donut to completely skipping the morning meal. However, in December 2025, he clarified on The Katie Miller Podcast that his typical breakfast now consists of steak, eggs, and coffee. It’s a simple yet nutritious meal that fits into the overall principle of minimizing everyday decisions.
Musk doesn’t work a set schedule during the day or set specific hours for individual companies. He has described his approach as managing «depending on the crisis of the moment»: the business where the situation is most tense receives more attention. In 2021, Musk openly said that he can switch between Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter several times a day if circumstances require it.
Public examples support this approach. In January 2023, X users noted that in one day, Musk managed to testify in court, attend an event at the Tesla factory in Nevada, work with the Tesla team on AI, and end the day at Twitter headquarters after midnight. Musk himself confirmed at the time that it had been a «very long day.»
In his comments to reporters, he made no secret of the fact that he works practically without days off. «I wake up, work, go to bed — and so on, seven days a week,» he said in 2023, adding that he had to maintain this pace until key areas stabilized. During Tesla’s financial call in April 2024, Musk also noted that the company takes up most of his working time, and Sundays off are extremely rare.
Elon Musk has repeatedly emphasized that his financial and business success is associated with the rejection of the standard model of a 40-hour work week. Over the years, he has spoken of 80-120 hours of work per week, acknowledging that such a regime has a serious physical and psychological cost. At the same time, it is this approach that has allowed him to simultaneously manage companies in radically different areas — from electric cars and space launches to social platforms and artificial intelligence. His daily routine often becomes an example of an extreme management style that arouses both admiration and criticism from experts.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radosław Sikorski commented on Elon Musk’s statements about the need to disband the European Union, after the EU imposed a multi-million fine on his social network X (Twitter).
The European Union fined X (Twitter) for selling verification ticks to bots. The owner of the social network Elon Musk was offended and calls for the dissolution of the EU
