“What’s the deal?” a candidate asked a talent specialist after applying for a job. Do other IT professionals consider this type of communication the norm?

Artem Nikityuk, Talent Acquisition Lead at consulting and auditing company Deloitte, shared a screenshot of a correspondence with a candidate who responded to a vacancy. The applicant’s response was in a somewhat unusual manner and Artem asked how other colleagues and experts felt about this. Which IT professionals shared their impressions and were any of them outraged or surprised?

The applicant’s response was in a somewhat unusual manner and Artem asked how other colleagues and experts felt about this. Which IT professionals shared their impressions and were any of them outraged or surprised?

«Colleagues, experts, have you encountered such situations? Is this all normal, or is it not so?» asks Artem Nikityuk on Linkedin.

The responses from IT specialists were divided.

For whom is this the norm?

Anatoliy Grinchuk, Senior Software Engineer at Grid Dynamics
Well, you need to write the information about the money right away.
Artem Knysh, Product UI UX Designer
Ah-ha-ha. It’s okay. Direct question.
Diana Gavrilova, 2D Artist/Illustrator
A normal question, but what do you think is better to ask about how «friendly the team is» or about the availability of «cookies in the office»?
Igor Sokolyuk, Technical Lead, Exabeam, Cybersecurity
I see a straightforward person who gets down to business right away without any preamble.
Alexey Mikheev, Senior Software Engineer (.NET)
It’s probably better to answer a little differently, but overall, why these long negotiations if in the end it turns out that the number is too small.

For whom are such answers «not OK»?

Anton Pohonets, Android Software Engineer
If you’ve ever borrowed from him and haven’t paid him back, that’s fine. In other cases, not so much.
Oleksandra Mukomel, Recruitment partner at Capyba-RA agency
The person has a 90s business streak. At the start of my career, the director once answered such a question with «no offense» and spat to the left. It was a masterpiece, just like your screenshot.
Daria Lukyanova, Senior Recruiter
I have encountered this more than once. There have been cases when candidates have considered it acceptable to threaten and communicate obscenely — I still don’t understand why they would do that. After all, each of us has the right to choose who to communicate with and which vacancies to discuss. If the offer is not interesting — it is enough to simply politely refuse, without insults or negativity. What are the chances that I will return to this person with another offer?

Instead of a conclusion

The vast majority of commentators under Artem’s post believe that the candidate is right, because he immediately got to the point. Although some, including Software Engineering Leader & Architect Lev Vanyan, said that the wording could have been better. And as DevOps Oleksandr Markusik noted, sometimes it is really difficult to find a balance between a businesslike and friendly communication style during an interview.

UA Project Manager at MilTech Vitaliy Skugarev tried to explain by his own example why the question of money can be normal and appropriate. He told about a situation that happened to him personally. «I am from Chernihiv, I am going to an interview in Kyiv, because the salary will be discussed during the interview. Everything is going well, my expertise suits me, but when they announce the level of my future salary, I understand that I will not be able to afford renting an apartment and living in Kyiv. Lost time and money for long-distance trips. It happened several times,» he said.

Lead Software Test Engineer Yulia Berezhanska explained that vacancies without a salary range are «a little bit out of date.» «Even in the employer’s market, be conscientious, put up salary ranges so that people don’t waste their time unnecessarily. You understand, if you treat a person with respect, they’ll probably treat you the same way,» the specialist added.
