Recently, 43-year-old Shahid Adnan was sentenced to three years in prison in Liverpool after he pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering and hacking, Dexerto reports .
According to prosecutors, Adnan earned more than $400,000 by completing coursework, assignments, and taking online exams for students.
Adnan, who worked as an Amazon Flex delivery driver and tutor, ran a company called Study Sharp Ltd. Prosecutors said he obtained logins and passwords from students at Liverpool John Moores University and used them to access university systems.
The scheme was exposed in February 2023, when one of the students handed over a flash drive with a term paper to the head of the computer forensics department at the same university.
After checking the device, the manager discovered that it had previously been used by Adnan. Documents on the flash drive also indicated a connection to Study Sharp Ltd.
Investigators later found Excel spreadsheets with data from other students, including lists of courses, deadlines for coursework, and logins and passwords for logging into the system.
Adnan admitted to taking an exam for one of the students by logging into his personal LJMU account. He said he received around $337 for the service, but claimed he was unaware that permission from the university was required to access someone else's account.
After that, the police checked Adnan's finances and found that he lived lavishly, and his wealth significantly exceeded the official income of the Amazon driver.
His accounts were found to contain about $2 million at Barclays Bank, about $810,000 in a personal account at Lloyds, another about $331,000 in a business account at the same Lloyds, and about $149,000 in PayPal.
In addition, law enforcement officers found out that the man owns Audi and BMW cars, and his house is furnished with expensive furniture and household appliances.
Police believe Adnan may have carried out tasks for 124 students at universities around the world.
