The MILES system teaches future officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to fight with laser "shots"

Future officers of the Defense Forces are taught to work in combat not only with maps and models, but also in a full-fledged tactical environment, where every shot and miss is recorded by electronics. In particular, the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachny uses the MILES combat simulation system for this, which allows practicing the actions of units without live ammunition.

As reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) is a complex of laser emitters on weapons and damage sensors on military equipment. During the exercises, a beam works instead of a bullet: if the system records a «hit», the fighter receives an instant signal about a conditional hit, and the instructors receive a record in the system for further analysis.

The academy uses the complex in tactical classes of various levels: from practicing individual actions to bilateral company exercises and training in the «Combat in the City» training complex. The system records all movements, assault attempts, deviations and mistakes of the cadets in real time, after which the instructors can analyze frame by frame who «hit» whom, where the unit was delayed, and where, on the contrary, it lost the initiative.

The key advantage of MILES is safety and resource savings. Cadets work with standard weapons and equipment, but without live ammunition, which reduces risks for personnel and allows for more intensive training without additional costs for ammunition and range logistics. At the same time, the quality of training increases thanks to objective data: you can no longer «forget» about an unsuccessful maneuver or write off a mistake as a «misunderstanding.»

The MILES concept itself emerged in the US military in the late 1970s as a way to simulate combat using laser emitters and sensors on fighters and equipment. The system quickly became a standard for training troops in many armies around the world and is constantly being updated: from the first kits for infantry to modern modules for armored vehicles and aviation.

In Ukraine, MILES-based laser combat simulation technology is also being developed by its own developers. In particular, the U-Force research and production company creates MILES-based simulators, VR simulators, interactive shooting ranges, and complexes for training Defense Forces units and training centers, which allows for the gradual formation of a national infrastructure for live combat training without being tied only to imported solutions.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the Ukrainian military is systematically moving from «shooting at banks» to high-tech training: the Ministry of Defense officially allowed the use of electronic simulators «Chaika» and «Chaika-M» («Fly Swatter») in the Armed Forces, which prepare calculations for the destruction of drones and cruise missiles without the use of ammunition.
