“They abandoned the project with a Ukrainian company. The reason is that they hired a Russian as marketing director.” The tech community is discussing why “good Russians” are still taboo, but for some it is not obvious

The owner and creative director of the video production company Guys Who Shoot, Yevgeny Astashov, said that he was forced to abandon a project with a Ukrainian company due to its cooperation with Russians. According to him, this happened about a month ago.

«The reason is that they hired a Russian as marketing director. We were told several times that he was «not from Russia,» «living abroad,» and generally «just a specialist.» But his Moscow accent immediately gave him away. The same one with long vowels like «pasmatri-ite,» he ironically said on his LinkedIn page.

Astashov added that his team thoroughly checked the biography and contacts of this marketing director before drawing any conclusions.

«In 2023, he was in Russia, has relatives there and, most likely, financial connections. In simple words, he sends money there. And therefore, even if indirectly, he supports the country that bombs our cities every day,» the creative director of Guys Who Shoot stated.

Yevgeny Astashov addressed the community with the question of when such an attitude towards Russians became the norm, and what is the situation with this in other Ukrainian companies.

«We basically don’t work with clients who have even a hint of connection to p***s»

Sales Manager Yulia Vetlugina said that she also had an unpleasant experience interacting with an ethnic Russian who was her employer.

«I faced the same thing. Only it was an employer and I found out that he was a British citizen. And then hell began! Humiliation, contempt. A stupid energy vampire. I caused him such a slaughter that he was scared to death. I sympathize very much,» she said.

Software engineer Pavlo Valor left a concise comment on similar situations.

«Not everyone has self-respect, or even understands what it means,» the specialist stated.

An equally categorical comment was left by the account of the company DevRedo, which offers WP development, SEO, and integrated marketing services.

«We generally do not work with clients who have even a hint of connection to p***s,» DevRedo noted.

A specialist in the field of Reputation management, signed as Sana Guk, noted that she also had a case of refusal to cooperate in a similar situation.

«I refused to cooperate with a Ukrainian company whose CEO is a Russian. De jure she has European citizenship. But in fact she is a Russian from Tver who doesn’t know a single word of Ukrainian. Actually, that’s what gave her away,» she said in a comment.

Not everything is so clear-cut.

At the same time, despite the almost complete support for Yevgeny Astashov’s position, there were contributors in the comments who considered the topic starter’s opinion erroneous. We note that both contributors with this worldview were Russian-speaking (we translate their comments into Ukrainian).

For example, Delivery Manager Yevgen Tymoshenko believes that such a position is actually harmful to the Ukrainian economy.

«The truth is more complicated and unpleasant. You are a top manager. The success of the company, the future of its employees, and the money it earns should be important to you… If you think that by creating an additional obstacle to the entry of work into Ukrainian companies, you are doing a good and right thing, it is not so. You are killing our economy, but with your head held high,» the contributor expressed his «not so unambiguous» position.

He was also supported by Backend Engineer Denis Maleev.

«Look at the financial flows through open data in our Ukrainian companies… Many have connections through offshore with the Rashka. Let’s then mass layoffs from such companies? So that people are left without food, but proud. If you as a company can afford it in the current market, then respect. But if this decision does not benefit employees, ends with cut salaries or salaries below the market — then this is a bad decision,» the specialist sees his arguments in a more loyal attitude to such situations.
