An Odessa developer has created a Telegram bot that combines dozens of alarm monitoring channels into one feed. How bot_allert works
Backend and AI engineer Vladyslav Skopenko launched the open-source project bot_allert — a Telegram bot that solves the problem of information overload when monitoring air alerts. When the number of such sources reaches dozens, users risk either getting tired of constant notifications or missing the danger. The developed tool solves this dilemma by combining notifications into a convenient and customizable feed.

The developed tool solves this dilemma by combining notifications into a convenient and customizable feed.
“A person monitors about twenty channels with alarms. Some of them are important, the rest are mostly noise. If you turn off the sound, you can miss something important. If you don’t turn it off, the phone rings constantly,” Vladislav Skopenko explains the purpose of his development.
How the bot works
bot_allert combines all selected channels from a separate Telegram folder into one common feed and forwards posts to a single chat. The tool automatically adjusts to the user's system settings: if a specific channel is disabled, messages from it will arrive silently, and from important sources - with sound.
To implement this logic, the developer had to use a combined scheme of two clients:
“The bot cannot forward posts from channels in which it is not present. Therefore, two clients work: one is logged into the user's account and only reads posts and settings, the second, a regular bot, sends them,” the engineer notes.
The developer also emphasized that the bot works exclusively in reading mode: it does not publish materials, does not change the read status, and does not perform actions with subscriptions.
Technical challenges and optimization
During development, the engineer faced several technical challenges.
In particular, it turned out that “silent” statuses in Telegram are stored in different ways — with a flag, a blocking end date, or an empty sound, so the bot had to take all three options into account. In addition, there were difficulties with formatting due to the fact that the messenger calculates text positions in UTF-16, where emojis shifted links and bold font and required additional recalculations. Despite these nuances, the tool was optimized to work even on weak hardware — it runs without problems on the free Oracle Cloud Free Tier server.
"There were no free ARM servers ("Out of capacity"), so I took a micro-virtual machine with 1 GB of memory and added swap so that the Docker image could be assembled on it. The bot needs about 100 MB," the IT guy shares.
Security and restrictions
The project is completely decentralized and open-source: it does not have a single server, and each user runs their own bot instance for their account using Docker or Python 3.12+ (with uv).
Among the current limitations of the tool, the author highlights the lack of tracking of post edits/deletions, forwarding albums in separate messages, and skipping publications created when the bot restarts.
