Even before its release, the Ukrainian game Dear Passengers from the Kyiv studio Flexus Games was among the top ten most desired projects on Steam. The developers managed to organically collect over a million additions to the wishlists without large marketing budgets. The Friendslope Phenomenon. How Friendly Chaos and Ukrainian Indie Hits Took Over the Gaming Industry

Even before its release, the Ukrainian game Dear Passengers from the Kyiv studio Flexus Games was among the top ten most desired projects on Steam. The developers managed to organically collect over a million additions to the wishlists without large marketing budgets. Its success lies not only in the original idea of a simulator of the crew of the worst airline in the world, but also in its successful entry into one of the most popular modern trends, which was called friendslop.

We look at how this new genre has proven that players don't need flawless high-tech projects so much as vivid emotions from overcoming absurd difficulties together. We also share a selection of 10 vivid friendslap games.

What is a friendslope?

To understand the scale of this phenomenon, it is worth understanding what friendslope is and where it came from. The name itself is formed from a combination of English words meaning friends and something second-rate. Initially, this term was used on social networks in a satirical way to describe low-budget projects that gamers bought solely to spend time in the company and laugh at bugs. However, very soon the developers and the gaming community itself adopted this name, turning the insult into a kind of quality mark of a friendly fan.

The essence of friendsloop is the lowest possible entry threshold, intentionally broken or unpredictable physics, and an emphasis exclusively on social interaction. There is always spatial voice chat, which turns a simple gameplay into a generator of uncontrolled chaos, laughter, and panic.

Game marketer and consultant Chris Zukowski assures that friendslope is a unique category with incredibly “hungry” players for new content who are ready to change the main game with joy and enthusiasm every few months. The expert compares the friendslope audience to fast food lovers. Players simply have a vital need to regularly receive new portions of social chaos, they literally “have to eat” fresh projects.

As Zukowski noted in December 2023, it seemed to many that the niche had reached its absolute peak, as the then-hit Lethal Company had amassed 197,000 daily users. However, in March 2025, the release of REPO easily broke through this ceiling, setting a new record of over 280,000 players simultaneously playing various friendslope games. New surges followed, and although the releases of RV There Yet? and Peak failed to immediately break this figure, in June 2026, the debut of Meccha Chameleon caused a new historic jump to an incredible 350-366,000 simultaneous users.

Peak players in popular friendslope games

Zukovsky notes that the life cycle of top games here is very specific: at the start, they accumulate over 50% of the entire niche audience, after which, within three to nine months, their share naturally decreases to approximately 10%.

A selection of friendslap games

Dear Passengers

It is worth starting this selection with Ukrainian games. As already mentioned at the beginning, the most popular Ukrainian game in this genre is Dear Passengers . Although this project has not yet been released, it has already made a real splash long before its release.

You and your friends take on the role of employees of a budget airline where flight safety is the last priority. While the pilot struggles to hold the controls of a plane that is literally falling apart in turbulence, the crew must put out cabin fires, deal with hysterical passengers, and hide contraband. This concentrated stress quickly turns into hysterical laughter, generating the perfect moments for viral videos.

Last Pirates: Die Together

Another ambitious Ukrainian project is Last Pirates: Die Together from the RetroStyle Games studio. This is a cooperative comedy horror about failed pirates who are forced to land on creepy cursed islands to fulfill their captain's whims.

The main highlight of the game is the incredibly funny physics of the characters' elastic arms, with which players grab treasures while trying to escape from the bloodthirsty local monsters. Greed here is always punished with a painful death, and the inability to predict which bush a monster will jump out of makes the team panicky scream into the voice chat, which is an absolute standard of the genre.

Lethal Company

When talking about the emergence of friendsloop, it is absolutely impossible to ignore the aforementioned game Lethal Company, which at one time set the bar at 197 thousand simultaneous players and became the gold standard of social horror.

Players travel across abandoned moons, collecting scrap metal for a sinister corporation. The brilliant work with spatial sound, when your comrade's voice suddenly cuts off in the darkness of a corridor after an encounter with an unknown creature, gave the Internet millions of views. The game proved that primitive graphics work perfectly if the social mechanics are set up perfectly.

REPO

In this game, the team turns into ruthless but vulnerable collectors who are forced to seize debtors' property in an extremely hostile and dangerous environment. The constant frantic pressure of circumstances, aggressive factors and the acute need to coordinate actions with lightning speed lead to fatal but extremely funny mistakes. Each raid turns into a test of nerves, ending with mutual accusations and uncontrollable laughter.

Peak

Then came Peak, a hugely popular game that managed to capture a whopping 50% of the genre's active audience. In this project, an inseparable team tries to conquer an extremely dangerous mountain peak together, using realistic physics of cables and carabiners.

The success of the expedition depends on the caution of each participant, because one wrong move by a clumsy comrade will inevitably drag the entire group into a deep abyss. The balance between focused work and comical falls made this game a real hit.

RV There Yet?

The release of RV There Yet? followed a similar scenario of capturing half of the market, proving that players constantly need new settings for their adventures. The game invites a group of friends to embark on the craziest road trip across the country in an old, rusty van that falls apart on the go. While the driver tries not to fly into a ditch, other players run around the cabin, repair the engine right on the go, and fend off external threats.

Content Warning

Content Warning at its peak had 47% of players in the genre. It was an incredibly apt satire on the culture of modern Internet bloggers, forcing players to descend into dark dungeons with one goal - to film the most terrible monsters on an old camera. The louder your partner screams before their inevitable death in the lens, the more views and money the team will receive. This absurd cynicism encourages friends to set each other up for a successful shot, generating tons of laughter.

Meccha Chameleon

The absolute record holder, who changed the rules of the game in June 2026, was Meccha Chameleon, raising the bar of simultaneous users to a fantastic 366,000. It brought to friendslope the mechanics of total mimicry and hide-and-seek in a chaotic environment where no object can be trusted.

Chained Together

No less important for the formation of the genre was the ruthless Chained Together. Here, players are literally chained together by one strong chain and must escape from the burning hell by synchronously jumping on moving platforms. The physics of the chain does not forgive mistakes: one careless jump pulls everyone into the fiery abyss. This is an uncompromising simulator of testing true friendship for strength, which brings incredible joy after overcoming difficult obstacles.

Mage Arena

Rounding out our list is Mage Arena, which serves as perfect proof that market share isn’t the only measure of success. Chris Zukowski notes that the game looks like a tiny purple blob on the charts, capturing only 11.75% of all users in the niche at its peak. However, this relatively small percentage didn’t stop the project from selling a phenomenal 624,000 copies and earning an incredible $3.69 million in net revenue in just its first week of release.

In Mage Arena, players are divided into two teams and battle using voice-activated magic spells. New abilities (like fireballs or portals) can be unlocked by finding torn pages on the map.

As we can see, friendslap has already ceased to be just an Internet meme and has turned into a stable gaming trend that has returned the focus on ordinary human communication to the industry. This genre reminds us that sometimes what you want from video games is not an epic plot or perfect graphics, but simply a good reason to get together with friends and laugh heartily at absurd situations. And it is nice to see that Ukrainian studios subtly sense these audience moods: thanks to projects like Dear Passengers and Last Pirates: Die Together, domestic developers are successfully establishing themselves in this niche.
