According to TechCrunch, the «ghost posts» option is rolling out worldwide. You can create such a post on mobile devices: a switch with a ghost icon has appeared in the «write» window. After publishing, a «ghost» post is visible in other users’ feeds, it is noticeably different in design so that it is easy to recognize among regular content. You can reply to it from both your phone and desktop, but replies are not published in the public feed, they come to the author in private messages.
Under the post, it is displayed that there were likes and replies, but only the author sees the exact counters and names of those who interacted. After 24 hours, the «ghost» disappears from the feed completely, but a copy is stored only for the author in the «Archive» section, which is accessible from the main settings menu. From there, the post can be viewed or deleted.
Privacy settings affect who you can talk to. If you have Direct Requests turned off, people you don’t follow won’t be able to reply to a ghost post. If you have Requests turned on, their replies will go to your Requests folder. You can manage these settings in the profile menu in the top right corner.
Meta says that «disappearing posts» should lower the barrier to posting: users will be able to share thoughts in the event stream without fear that posts will hang for years. For Threads, it is also a way to compete with X, which often uses third-party (sometimes paid) services to mass delete old tweets. This is not the first attempt at ephemeral texts: in 2020, Twitter launched Fleets, but closed it due to low demand. At the same time, the disappearing format has taken off well in Stories on Instagram and Facebook — and this is what Meta is counting on.
Ephemeral mode does not eliminate the risk of screenshots and reposts by third parties, and moving replies to private messages increases the burden on direct messages and moderation in private chats. Key questions for users: how will «ghosts» affect profile reach, will filters appear on the author’s archive, and how transparently will complaints about abuse in private replies work.
