Voice messages have long been a popular form of communication among young people, especially buzzers. TikTok now joins WhatsApp, Instagram, and iMessage as the most popular messaging apps. The company says the feature will be gradually rolling out to all users over the coming weeks.
As for photos and videos, they can be sent both from the device’s camera and from the gallery. The content can be edited before sending. At the same time, to protect users, there will be a restriction: photos or videos cannot be sent in the first message to a stranger — only content that is already on TikTok.
Special attention has been paid to the safety of teenagers. For example, images with a naked body will be automatically blocked by algorithms for users aged 16–18: neither the sender nor the recipient will see them. For adults, this feature is available as an option that can be activated or deactivated in the settings.
TikTok emphasizes that the innovation will help users express themselves in more convenient formats and bring the platform closer to other popular messengers.
The company has been gradually expanding its private communication capabilities. Last year, TikTok launched group chats, where up to 32 people can chat at the same time, as well as Creator Chat Rooms, a space for content creators and their followers. The new features are part of a strategy to transform the service from an entertainment app to a multi-functional social network.
