«The last month has been very busy and productive in terms of hiring. We have been actively recruiting and have invited three excellent specialists in just a few weeks. Over 500 responses were received for two vacancies — QA and DevOps, and over 15 interviews were conducted…», she said.

During the selection process, the company’s specialists accumulated several interesting observations about the candidate market, which were voiced by Natalia.

  1. There are three times more candidates than before.
  2. Most candidates agree to a salary lower than they had.
  3. Over 70% of candidates are looking for work due to «downsizing, layoffs, or slowing down…» projects.
  4. There were those who quit due to stress or burnout.
  5. Approximately 30% of candidates are currently abroad.
  6. Most often submitted from Poland, although there were reviews from other countries.
  7. Most candidates outside of Ukraine have higher salary expectations.
  8. Almost half expect the return of salaries, conditions, and realities that existed before the war.
  9. Classic — some candidates, without reading the requirements, simply send a standard resume without indicating the required experience.

She also highlighted several positive points.

  • Almost all resumes are very professional and clear. For example, in 2021, especially beginners, this was not a concern.
  • Candidates started writing to-the-point cover letters. That’s always nice.
  • We did not encounter a single rude or incorrect candidate, which used to happen from time to time.
  • All partings after interviews ended with warm wishes and a speedy Victory.

In the comments to Natalia’s post, IT users added several more trends characteristic of the modern labor market. Most of them are pessimistic.

Software Engineer Dmitry Goponov does not see anything positive in the labor market from the developer’s side. «The market is currently in such a state of recession, when the situation in the country + in the world in IT, to put it mildly, is not the best. Businesses are in no hurry to invest money in development, AI is quickly changing IT for candidates and businesses in a not-so-good way, who are used to doing what they have been doing for years. Therefore, the situation is now that there are many candidates, but not many jobs. But on the positive side — the number of offers in AI is growing, and it will only continue to grow both in development and in infrastructure. And we need to reorient ourselves now to what tomorrow will be conditionally for everyone in this field,» he believes.

iOS Developer Oleksiy Khomich suspects that nothing will ever be the same again. «The moment of takeoff and the attractiveness of Ukrainian IT are lost forever. If before we were overwhelmed with work, now we will be like the Indians — any work for a penny,» he noted.

Valeriy Shcherbak, Data Engineer, states: «The realities of the IT market. 97% of resumes went to waste,» he noted.

Talent Acquisition Specialist Kateryna Galenko, on the contrary, agrees with Natalia. «I agree with everything, it has become especially nice to receive professionally designed resumes, and candidates have begun to listen and happily correct if you give recommendations. At the end of the year, there were rejections of offers, some companies began to make counter-offers, and the number of vacancies has increased. That is, in my opinion, the market is already gradually starting to transition to a candidate market (observations are purely based on senior Node.js/React vacancies). Also, this year I encountered the long-forgotten „let’s do it after the holidays“,» she said.
