Three European companies are testing Shahed interceptor drones in Ukraine

In the finals of the NATO Innovation Challenge hackathon, three European teams demonstrated in Ukraine the viability of solutions for intercepting enemy UAVs. The final tests will be held in late October.
As «Military» writes, this was stated at a briefing by the senior national representative of Ukraine at JATEC, Colonel Valeriy Vyshnivskyi: the companies have not yet been named, but all three have already passed field tests «through brigades and specific units» right at the front.
According to Vyshnivsky, the competition was announced in the spring of 2025, initially looking for a way to counter the planned air bombs of the Russian Federation. More than 40 participants from NATO countries applied for the selection, and a jury of Alliance experts and Ukrainian specialists selected three finalists. The solutions turned out to be especially effective against various types of drones, in particular Shahed. The package of developments is as follows: an interceptor drone with its own defeat system, a controlled swarm for «covering» the target and an AI unit that connects to any interceptor and «pulls» it to the target during the attack.
A final testing session will take place at the end of October. After that, Allied Command Transformation will prepare a strategic report with a conclusion on whether the solutions are ready for wider use. In parallel, Ukraine and partners will decide which technologies to launch into production and supply.
Funding can go in two ways: through NSATU (NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine) tools and coalition programs like the «Drone Coalition.» Vyshnivskyi separately emphasized that all three teams are already de facto «European-Ukrainian»: they have found ways to scale in Ukraine, and therefore serial production and service can be placed on our territory.
Importantly, the benefits of these solutions do not depend on the formal finale of the competition: Ukraine can use them now if the units need them and show results. For the army, this means faster interceptions of «shaheeds», more flexible defense of critical infrastructure, and less dependence on expensive air defense missiles where they are not advisable to spend.
A little more about JATEC
A structure within NATO, reporting to the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation; headed by Polish Brigadier General Wojciech Ożga. The center collects and synthesizes combat lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war to integrate them into the doctrines and practices of both NATO and Ukraine. The goal is to increase interoperability, accelerate the implementation of working solutions, and scale up what really helps on the battlefield.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how Quantum Systems developed the Jäger drone interceptor in six months. It is positioned as a cost-effective means of combating enemy drones with a hybrid power plant that combines electric propulsion with a solid-fuel rocket booster.
