The first educational cyber incident response team in Ukraine, CSIRT-ED, has been launched at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, created to train future cybersecurity specialists in conditions as close as possible to real threats.
According to the official Telegram channel of the State Special Communications Service, CSIRT-ED was created at the Institute of Special Communications and Information Protection of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which is part of the training system for the security sector. The team was integrated directly into the educational process, making it part of the cyber defense training programs.
As part of CSIRT-ED, students, under the guidance of practicing teachers, work with real-life cyber incident scenarios. They practice attack detection, threat analysis, response, and mitigation, gaining practical experience while studying, not after entering the job market.
The State Service for Special Communications notes that this approach allows training specialists who are ready to work in conditions of constant cyberattacks and high workload. Particular emphasis is placed on training personnel for state information systems and the security and defense sector, where the speed and quality of response to incidents are critically important.
It is also emphasized that the participation of education seekers in the work of CSIRT-ED takes place in a controlled format with mentoring and clearly defined procedures, which allows combining learning with practice without risks to the infrastructure.
CSIRTs (Computer Security Incident Response Teams) are responsible for responding to cyber incidents, analyzing attacks, and restoring systems. In Ukraine, such functions are traditionally performed by state and departmental structures, but the format of the educational CSIRT team is new for the country. Its implementation is designed to bridge the gap between the theoretical training of students and the real requirements for cyber specialists in the public sector.
