The Armed Forces of Ukraine approved the concept of using AI and launched units for testing at the front
The Defense Forces have officially defined an approach to the use of artificial intelligence: the military has approved a profile concept and has already formed specialized units that are to test AI solutions in combat conditions and provide feedback for their refinement.

According to Military, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brigadier General Andriy Lebedenko, and the Head of the Central Department of Innovation Activities, Colonel Vitaliy Dobryansky, announced the approval of the Concept of the Use of AI in the Armed Forces of Ukraine during a final briefing for the media. They also said that as part of the implementation of the document, they created units responsible specifically for testing technologies on the battlefield.
At the same time, the military is showing how AI is already being used in practice. In particular, the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of the Airborne Assault Forces previously described the use of machine vision on drones: it helps not only transmit images, but also recognize targets and classify objects, for example, distinguish an armored vehicle from other equipment.
A separate class of tasks is the interception of high-speed targets such as jet drones or cruise missiles. In such scenarios, the system needs instant trajectory processing and simultaneous calculation of external factors, including wind, humidity, temperature, and altitude. Another example is auto-correction: the drone can keep a moving target in sight by processing sensor data and controlling the engines and rudders without constant manual prompts.
The publication also mentions that working solutions that combine such functions at the level of small drones have been implemented by only a few companies in the world; examples include The Fourth Law and their «Lupinis-10-TFL-1».
The scaling of AI in the military comes amid the rapid development of unmanned systems, where the winner is the one who finds the target faster, recognizes it more accurately, and more effectively defeats it in conditions of obstacles and difficult weather. The approval of the concept and the creation of units for combat testing should help to implement such solutions more quickly in units and weed out ineffective technologies even at the testing stage.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the Ministry of Defense is launching a basic minimum provision of drones to brigades and moving from manual collection of applications to automatic calculation of needs based on data from units.
