“Web3 games are inevitable”. Ubisoft announces another NFT game on the blockchain — this time in the Might and Magic universe
Gaming company Ubisoft and cryptocurrency company Immutable have announced Might & Magic Fates, a new strategic card game for Web3 in the famous gaming universe.
Gaming company Ubisoft and cryptocurrency company Immutable have announced Might & Magic Fates, a new strategic card game for Web3 in the famous gaming universe.
Ubisoft’s previous attempts to create blockchain games were met with critical acclaim from gamers, but the company is still determined to enter the market.
Unlike Ubisoft’s previous NFT games, Fates has only been announced and is not yet available to players. It’s not yet clear what the game will be like, as the company has not revealed any gameplay, graphics, or plot.
According to the official description on the Might & Magic Fates website, the game will feature standard card game mechanics: players can create decks by combining creatures, spells, artifacts, buildings, and heroes from different Might & Magic factions, challenge other players, and expand their card collections by trading, playing, or opening booster packs filled with cards of varying rarities.
Matches in Fates are based on a gold-based mana system that is generated directly from the cards in the player’s hand to allow for fast-paced matches and multi-layered deck building strategies. As in the Might and Magic games, heroes play a central role: they fight side by side with their army of creatures, can equip various artifacts and earn experience during each battle, unlocking abilities that can turn the tide of the duel, the developers say.
While the game is Ubisoft’s intellectual property, it’s being created in partnership with Immutable, a cryptocurrency company that creates blockchain games and NFTs. According to the description, players will be able to trade their cards using Immutable’s blockchain and own them as NFTs. This marks the first game in the Might & Magic universe in 11 years to be a blockchain game, which could be a disappointment for fans.
«Web3 games are inevitable,» commented the announcement on the official Might & Magic Fates account on X (Twitter). At the same time, Ubisoft seems to realize that most gamers are completely skeptical of blockchain games, and therefore emphasizes that the «Web3 layer that unlocks digital property» in Might & Magic Fates is an optional feature.
Recall that in December last year, the online shooter Shatterline from Ukrainian studio Frag Lab, which was once in free early access on Steam, became available on the Epic Games Store. The game now costs $4.99 (or 92 UAH for the Ukrainian region) and has a web3 gaming company as a publisher.
