Ukraine is creating a new air defense system with AI to shoot down Russian drones and missiles more cheaply
The Ministry of Defense, together with Palantir, is preparing for deployment a new generation of domestic interceptors with elements of artificial intelligence and, in parallel, is collecting «war data» into a single system to more quickly predict and shoot down air attacks.
The Ministry of Defense, together with Palantir, is preparing for deployment a new generation of domestic interceptors with elements of artificial intelligence and, in parallel, is collecting «war data» into a single system to more quickly predict and shoot down air attacks.
According to The Washington Post, the project was presented by the newly appointed Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov: Ukraine has signed an agreement with the American Palantir to create a «Dataroom» based on arrays of sensor data and images collected over the years of full-scale war. The idea of the system is to teach models to recognize signs of future strikes, predict attack scenarios, and then guide cheaper autonomous interceptors to targets in real time.
The article also quotes the head of the Brave1 cluster, Andriy Hrytsenyuk, who describes the concept as an attempt to make the country «unconquerable» by reducing the effect of missile and drone terror on cities. The key requirement for such air defense, according to the authors’ logic, is economics: defense should cost less than attack means and react faster than a person can in manual mode.
As an example of an interceptor, WP cites the Octopus: Ukrainian officials claim that it costs several thousand dollars and can reliably shoot down the more expensive «Shaheeds». The text also mentions a radius of almost 200 km and the possibility of installing various sensors (electro-optical, infrared or thermal), which are planned to «enhance» the AI for target recognition.
The WP column highlights the dramatic scaling of Ukrainian defense tech: Brave1 allegedly records an increase in production capacity from $1 billion in 2022 to an estimated $35 billion in 2025, as well as the expansion of the drone manufacturer market to hundreds of companies. Against this background, «Dataroom» is presented as an attempt to turn accumulated combat data into the basis for national, fast and relatively cheap air defense.

Тест dev.ua
