Ukrainian VARTA tests autonomous interceptor drones with artificial intelligence system

Ukrainian company VARTA is bringing its own Dozor AI interceptor drone, equipped with an autonomous system for detecting and tracking enemy aircraft, to the final stage of testing. In the future, this may allow building «small skies» — segments of air defense, where interceptor drones will play a key role.
As Militarny reports, the developers have already demonstrated the operation of Dozor AI on video. The device has a built-in artificial intelligence system capable of independently detecting, identifying, and tracking enemy FPV drones and reconnaissance aircraft even in difficult conditions, including when countering electronic warfare (EW) equipment.
The company emphasizes that the integration of Dozor AI with situational awareness platforms, including the DELTA system, will allow a single operator to control a group of 5-7 interceptors. This significantly reduces the workload on pilots and allows for a more flexible air defense model.
VARTA is also working on other solutions to combat enemy drones. In June 2025, at the Drone Summit forum in Riga, the company first introduced the VARTA DroneHunter system. This is a module that is installed on a multicopter and uses a special anti-drone charge with electrical initiation. The effective range is from 5 to 20 meters, and the four-barrel version is able to increase the density of fire. The system weighs only 2.3 kg, which makes it possible to integrate it even into mid-range FPV drones.
The use of drone interceptors is becoming critically important for Ukraine, as Russian FPV drones and reconnaissance aircraft pose a constant threat on the front. At the same time, the cost of producing interceptors is significantly lower than traditional air defense missiles, so Ukrainian companies are trying to combine cheapness with autonomy and artificial intelligence. Similar VARTA projects reinforce the trend, when drones are becoming a key element of modern air defense.
Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the founder of PetCube and the miltech startup TheFourthLaw, Yaroslav Azhnyuk, reported that the Kurbas thermal imaging cameras of another of his startups, Odd Systems, are being installed on Sting interceptor drones from the Wild Hornets company.
