Microsoft notes that high levels of AI use do not automatically mean that these professions will be destroyed by artificial intelligence, but employers are pausing hiring and reducing positions to make room for increased productivity.
According to Fortune, translators, historians, and writers are among the professions with the highest rate of AI adoption, meaning that the tasks of these professions are most aligned with current AI capabilities. Customer service representatives and sales representatives will also be forced to compete with AI.
In general, occupations that are most vulnerable are those involving intellectual work, such as computer work, mathematics, or office administration. Sales occupations also rank high in the rankings, as they often involve sharing and explaining information.
Researchers note that some professions are unlikely to be affected by AI: dredger operators; bridge and lock operators; water treatment plant and system operators. These professions are largely unaffected by generative AI, partly due to the requirements for working with their equipment.

However, tech leaders like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang say that every profession will be affected by AI in one way or another. «AI will impact every profession, and it will happen immediately. There’s no doubt about it. You won’t lose your job to AI, but you will lose your job to someone using AI,» Huang says.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also warns that AI could destroy entire job categories, saying it could replace support workers because it «makes no mistakes.»
Many professions that often require a college degree, such as political scientists, journalists, and management analysts, have also been added to the list of AI vulnerabilities, so a degree is no longer a guarantee of protection from change, researchers say.
At the same time, the researchers acknowledged that their findings do not capture the full scope of the AI revolution — and that further automation may be driven by more than just generative technology. «Our measurements are limited to LLM: other applications of AI could certainly impact occupations related to the operation and monitoring of equipment, such as truck driving,» the report notes.
«Our research shows that AI supports many tasks, especially those related to research, writing, and communication, but does not indicate that it can fully perform any single profession. As AI adoption accelerates, it is important to continue to study and better understand its social and economic impact,» said Kieran Tomlinson, senior researcher at Microsoft.
