The new unmanned aerial vehicle, which was told to «Military», was developed by the Ukrainian company DeepStrikeTech. Initially, it was created as a kamikaze strike drone to destroy targets at great depths. But later the platform gained versatility — «Batyar» was able to perform a number of combat roles, including working as a false target, a reusable front-line strike drone, or even a bomber.
The UAV weighs only 16 kg and has a gasoline engine, which allows it to cover more than 800 km in the deep strike version. The strike modification of the drone is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 18 kg — this is enough to destroy warehouses, oil depots or equipment. The drone is launched from a catapult or even from the body of a car, which simplifies logistics and allows you to do without stationary infrastructure.
A feature of the drone is its ability to accurately target even when damaged. According to the developers, the Batyar maintains its course even when diving towards the target, which significantly increases its effectiveness compared to many analogues.
The shape of the Batyar hull is indeed similar to the Shahed-136 drones, but this similarity is more of a coincidence. The aerodynamic model of the Ukrainian drone was completely developed by DeepStrikeTech engineers, who were guided by Western technical documentation. The visual similarity is the result of optimizing the shape to achieve maximum flight time and accuracy.
The concept of a compact drone with a long flight range has been around for a long time. Back in 1994, Germany developed the DAR (Drone Anti-Radar), a device designed to simulate large air targets and destroy enemy radars. It weighed 110 kg, reached speeds of up to 250 km/h and remained in the air for up to three hours. The DAR is considered the first «shaheed”-style drone, although it did not reach mass production.
The concept has now been picked up by several states and companies, including Ukraine. In 2025, Ukrainian defenders will receive other strike drones, including the SETH UAS, which also resembles the Shahed in shape but has its own electronics and functionality.
The conditions of a full-scale war and the need for cheap, effective and mobile means of destruction force Ukrainian companies to look for solutions that can be massively applied on the battlefield. «Batyar» is another example of how Ukrainian developers do not just copy, but rethink well-known models, creating unique products capable of repelling an aggressor even at a distance of hundreds of kilometers.
