Ukraine launches free IT course on DevOps basics for veterans, military personnel and their families
A new free training course "Fundamentals of DevOps Technologies" from the IT company SoftServe is launching for veterans, military personnel, and their family members.
A new free training course "Fundamentals of DevOps Technologies" from the IT company SoftServe is launching for veterans, military personnel, and their family members.
The course is being launched as part of the global EmpowerU program from IT company SoftServe in collaboration with two partners — the Lobby X recruitment platform and the Ukrainian Veterans Fund of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, according to the course press release.
The course will teach participants the basics of DevOps, a direction that combines development and operations processes to accelerate and improve software creation. According to DOU, this is one of the most in-demand technical professions in IT in Ukraine.
Beginners will learn how to work with databases, configure the work environment, and optimize project deployment. This will allow future DevOps specialists to more effectively implement changes and automate processes at every stage of development.
“We decided to dedicate this course to the basics of DevOps, because during their service, military personnel who are interested in IT often deal with network and system administration. While studying at the course, participants will be able to expand their knowledge and get a foundation to start a career as DevOps engineers. Also, for graduates of the previous course on “Basics of Database Work”, this will be a good opportunity to continue their education,” comments Andriy Pereymybida, Head of the Talent Development Center at SoftServe.
The course is created taking into account many years of experience of SoftServe Academy and provides access to additional learning resources, a community of like-minded people, development of flexible skills, and support from mentors.
Lectures will begin on February 3 , and will be conducted by experienced SoftServe mentors twice a week in an online format. They will explain the theoretical foundations, as well as analyze practical work and assign homework. The classes will be available in recording for those who were unable to join the online lecture. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate.

The number of places on the course is limited, so after registering you will need to take a short test on your knowledge of basic DevOps concepts and create a Discord account.
The course program includes:
— basics of working with Git/GitHub;
— Linux: file system structure and basic administration tasks;
— Bash and PowerShell scripting languages;
— network support concepts: protocols, IP addresses, subnetting, and routing;
— work with popular continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools: Jenkins, GitHub Actions;
— cloud providers IaaS, PaaS/Hosting;
— working with AWS, Azure and GCP services;
— artifacts in DevOps and their role in development;
— soft skills — skills needed to work in the IT industry;
— job search tips, resume preparation, etc.
"Globally, digitalization and automation are penetrating all spheres of the economy, and the Ukrainian market is not lagging behind global trends. Therefore, mastering IT specialties and acquiring basic technical knowledge is moving into the category of skills that a specialist should possess in 2025. We believe that IT education will be useful to veterans, no matter what professional path they choose for themselves in the future. Perhaps this is the very profession in which veterans will be able to best realize their creative potential," notes Olga Bandrivska, head of the military department of Lobby X.
"Fundamentals of DevOps Technologies" became the fourth training course in Ukraine, which is implemented within the framework of the global SoftServe program - "EmpowerU". The initiative started in April 2023 and covers Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Mexico and Colombia. The main goal of "EmpowerU" is to provide equal opportunities for everyone who wants to study and dreams of a career in IT.
