Vega has transferred 115 Vodafone base stations to an optical network: mobile communications will become more stable even during peak hours
Telecom operator Vega, part of the Vodafone Ukraine group, announced the completion of the first stage of modernization: the company transferred 115 base stations of the mobile operator to the xPON fiber-optic network. This solution allows to significantly improve the quality of mobile communications, in particular in large cities, where there is an increase in the load on the network.
This is stated in the company’s press release. xPON technology provides bandwidth up to 1 Gbps now, with the potential to scale up to 10 Gbps without the need to upgrade cables. This means lower latency, faster data transfer and stable connection during streams, video calls or online games. At the same time, optics opens up full support for modern mobile communication standards, including 5G.
Vega explains that the modernization is primarily taking place in cities with a high concentration of users, where the network is operating at its limits. Optical connectivity here allows for a reduction in dependence on radio relay lines (RRL), which are less able to withstand peak loads. In addition, such infrastructure is more energy-efficient, as it requires less active equipment.
A little more about Vega
This is a telecom operator that develops fixed-line communications within the Vodafone Ukraine group. The company provides Internet services using GPON technology, SIP telephony, virtual PBXs, and data storage on Ukrainian and foreign servers.
According to Vega project manager Andriy Pavlyuk, «optical rails» are not only about the quality of communication today, but also about the long-term digital sustainability of Ukraine. Currently, Vega plans to continue the transition of base stations to xPON across the country.
We previously wrote about how Lanet overtook Kyivstar in terms of 10G-PON coverage in Kyiv: over 100 thousand subscribers have been connected. The provider launched the first segment of the XGPON network in the capital and plans to expand it by another 50 thousand connections by the fall.
