«Explore the best cities in Europe with Walkable! Turn buildings bright yellow, find hidden gems, connect with friends, and track your progress effortlessly!» reads the app’s description on the AppStore. It’s not currently available on Android.
As AIN.UA reports, the idea to create such an app came to Rogalsky during the coronavirus pandemic. He thought it would be convenient to have an app to track where you’ve been and where you haven’t been.
«Actually, I decided to return to it years ago, probably two. It’s just that at some point I wanted to have such a hobby — to create something. I had two projects: the other one was closed without ever seeing the light of day. I initially made both that and this project for the British market. That’s why it’s all in English now. But at the last moment we adapted it for all cities,» Mykhailo Rogalsky told the publication in a comment.
According to him, Walkable works in almost any city and country and noted that some have support for microdistricts. «For example, in Kyiv — the historical center, Lower and Upper Podil, Kurenivka, Tatarka. And in this way you can open small parts of the city and see how much you have opened the part that is close to you,» the developer noted.
A team of five people, including two Ukrainian students in London, worked on the project. Rogalsky does not disclose how much Walkable cost to develop, and says that it is a non-commercial project for now.
He aims to develop it through UGC content created by users themselves. For example, so that they can share interesting places in the city with their friends, such as «a beautiful alley» or «some coffee shop or nice shop.»
«It will be called Hidden Gems or „Hidden Treasures“, or like some artifacts in games. If your friends have placed some interesting place, (especially where you have not been yet) there will be a light shining there that will motivate you to go there,» explained Mykhailo Rogalsky.
Users now have the opportunity to compete with friends and receive achievements for the best results in discovering their city. The service has many social and competitive elements, which improves audience engagement, notes Scroll.
Rogalsky added that before creating an Android version and further developing the project, he wants to see if people are interested in such an application. This indicator would be 20-30% of users who will continue to use Walkable 2-3 weeks after installation.
