A Ukrainian solo developer has released the turn-based tactical game War Pawns into Steam Early Access. The project, set in the World War II setting, offers players fast-paced, dynamic battles on hexagonal maps, team-based multiplayer, and a built-in level editor.
A Ukrainian solo developer has released the turn-based tactical game War Pawns into Steam Early Access. The project, set in the World War II setting, offers players fast-paced, dynamic battles on hexagonal maps, team-based multiplayer, and a built-in level editor.
The release and development details were announced by the author of the SOKILL project on the game’s Steam page. According to him, the launch in early access is just the beginning of the active expansion of the project and filling it with new content.
In War Pawns, players command units on compact battlefields where positioning, flanking, and control of strategic points are crucial. The current version already features three factions with their own unique units—the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union. Players can enjoy a short single-player campaign for the United States, a survival mode, battles against bots, online multiplayer (from 1v1 battles to larger team confrontations), as well as training and a built-in map editor.
According to the developer’s plans, the game will be in early access for approximately 6–12 months. During this time, the author will focus on balance, user-friendliness, and gathering feedback from the community on Steam and Discord. The full version of the project is expected to feature new single-player scenarios, a possible cooperative mode, and additional factions. The developer also noted that after War Pawns is filled with content, its value will increase after leaving early access.

Currently, in the Ukrainian region of Steam, the cost of War Pawns is 207 UAH. The project has full Ukrainian localization.
